Thinking Biblically about Current Politics and Leadership

Follow Up from Sunday evening discussion panel at Grace Baptist – February 23, 2020.

We had a group of teens-adults sit down in front of us on Sunday night and delve into a Biblical pattern of thinking about our nation and politics and selection of leaders. We were all a little nervous to begin because this is such a divisive topic in our country. How can we speak Biblically about this? Can we speak Biblically about this topic? The answer is a resounding – “Yes”!

Scriptures about Politics and Human Leaders

Paul’s epistles – Romans 13:1-7; I Timothy 2:2; Ephesians 6:7-9 and Peter – I Peter 2:13-17

Jesus – Matthew 22:15-22

God to Israel – Deuteronomy 17:14-30; Proverbs 14:34; prophets on their behavior – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos

Attitude toward community – Jeremiah 29:3-7 (even Babylon); Mosaic Law- treatment of those in need & foreigner

God’s use of His servants with Rulers – Obadiah (Ahab), Daniel & friends (Nebuchadnezzar and Persian kings), Esther & Mordecai, Nehemiah (King Xerxes); God’s involvement with the Kings of Israel and Judah

Is God Apolitical? Christians should keep their nose out of politics and government?

Politics means

“activities associate with the Governance of nation or group, especially involving the debate or conflict among individuals and leadership to make decisions”

So is God involved in the affairs of mankind? Does He call us to be involved in Serving Him and Loving our Neighbor?
