God has saved us and given us a relationship that we might grow in knowing God and applying His promises to our life.
Important Steps for Every Christian’s Growth
- Grow in knowing God – read the Bible intentionally and purposefully. Ask God each time to show you more about Him and more about yourself. 2 Timothy 3:14-17
- Grow in knowing God’s Spirit – His presence and gift to your life upon repentance and faith. This is God’s power to move us, teach us, and protect us until heaven. Ephesians 1:11-14; John 16:5-15
- Grow in seeking and turning to God – learn to pray with humility; listening and seeking for God’s will to be more important than your own. Learn to come to God with your joys and sorrows and to seek His plans. Broaden your prayer life – for and with other followers of Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:6-7
- Grow by attaching yourself to God’s people – a local church. God rescues us from a crowd living away from Him and in His goodness places us into His family of believers. God has gifted local churches for encouragement, growing, teaching, protection, and unified worship. Imperfect churches are made up of redeemed (and often unredeemed!) sinners, so there is certain to be challenges and opportunities to practice patience and love. Salvation is through personal faith in Christ alone, but the church is imperative for healthy Christian development. Ephesians 4:1-3
- Grow at diminishing distractions and obstacles – we have innumerable distractions that can pull us away from spiritual disciplines, especially to being with God’s people each week for worship. It takes practice and time!
- Grow by cultivating your heart – growth will be partial and distorted if old habits and sins are given protection and defense in our hearts. Growth demands a steady removal as God’s Spirit reveals habits, thoughts, and practices that are opposed to God’s rule. As you put off the old, be quick to put on new habits, practices, and truths. Ephesians 4:21-32
